Transfer switches and load management
The transfer switch is what makes a generator safe to connect to your house. Here's how they work and what your options are.
A transfer switch connects your home's wiring to one power source at a time: the utility or the generator. That separation matters. Without it, a generator connected to house wiring can push power back out onto the lines, which is dangerous for utility crews working to restore service. A U.S. Department of Energy guide for contractors says transfer switches should be installed by a licensed electrician so homeowners can choose between grid and generator power safely.
What kinds of transfer switches are there?
- Automatic transfer switch. Standard with standby generators. It senses an outage, starts the generator and moves the load, then switches back when utility power returns.
- Manual transfer switch. Mounted beside the main panel and used with a portable generator. You start the generator and flip the switch yourself.
- Panel interlock. A mechanical device on the main panel that keeps the main breaker and the generator breaker from being on at the same time.
Whole-house or essential circuits?
A whole-house switch carries everything in the main panel. An essential-circuit setup moves only selected circuits to a smaller subpanel. Many systems also use load management, which sheds a big appliance like an AC compressor or water heater for a moment when the generator gets close to its limit. Load management can let a smaller generator run a house with central air, which is a common trade-off in Lake Charles.
Signs your switch needs a look
- The generator ran during an outage, but the house stayed dark
- Power didn't switch back to the utility after the grid came back
- Clicking, buzzing or a burning smell at the switch
- Corrosion or water inside the switch enclosure after a storm
Permits
Adding or replacing a transfer switch is electrical work on your service, so it needs an electrical permit from the City of Lake Charles Permit Center or, outside city limits, the parish Division of Planning and Development.
The generator company prices the job after looking at your house, your electrical panel and your fuel supply. We don't quote prices, and any number given over the phone before a site visit is only a rough starting point.

Common questions
Can I plug a portable generator into a wall outlet?
No. That can send power back through your wiring and out onto the utility lines, which is dangerous for line crews and for anyone in the house. Use a transfer switch or interlock installed by a licensed electrician.
Can an existing transfer switch be reused with a new generator?
Sometimes. It depends on the switch's rating, condition and compatibility with the new unit's controller. The installer will tell you after looking at it.
